Uncover the history of Alexanderplatz
Many are surprised to learn that the original vicinity of Alexanderplatz was a cattle market, named in honour of a Russian Emperor. Decades later, the Stadbahn station of the same name and a nearby market hall, followed by the opening of a department store ignited the development of the area as a commercial centre.
Unfortunately, most of the buildings standing in this era were demolished by bombing during the Second World War. In the years to come, Alexanderplatz was regenerated as the showcase of Socialist architecture and in effect became the central point of East-Berlin. As a consequence, many concrete grey and unattractive buildings were developed including the iconic television tower – a building that the local government was extremely proud of and is now a famous tourist attraction.
Nowadays the area has been further redeveloped to entice large international organisations to invest, with many global brands having offices and commercial stores here. Buildings contain both residential and commercial areas.
What to do and see
Soak up the German atmosphere by sipping freshly brewed coffee from one of the many cafés dotted around the streets, pick up a souvenir from a retail store or gift stand or partake in one of the many city sight-seeing tours which depart from here.
The German answer to Times Square boasts the famous television tower which is now used as a viewing platform for tourists – see all the way to the Reichstag and Victory Column. You will also find cinema complexes, restaurants, stores and bars make up the commercial hive here. If you find yourself visiting the city, make sure to visit at least once – there’s so much to see and do you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Millions pass through this famous thoroughfare each year and particularly in winter, the many Christmas markets at the Rotes Rathaus, Alexa Shopping Centre and on the streets around the world clock. However, if you are just passing through Berlin for onward travel to elsewhere around Berlin, Alexanderplatz has many transport choices for getting around.
